The University of Bari was instituted in October 9, 1924, on the foundations of the ancient Graduate Schools of Pharmacy and Notaryship activated immediately after the Unification of Italy as substitutes of the former Reale Liceo delle Puglie.

Successively, other Faculties were instituted, including the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, the Faculty of Economy and Commerce and Agriculture. Since 1944, the University has been extended with the institution of the Faculties of Humanities and Philosophy, Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences, Engeneering, Education Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Foreign Languages. In the past few years the University of Bari activated new university diploma and carry out annually and important range of specialisation courses.

The University of Bari can also boast an active partecipation in international research project. Indeed, from the point of view of a scientific collaboration, many are the agreements of cultural co-operation put into being with both European and American Universities as well as with some Universities of the Popular Republic of China. The University of Bari is also the headquarters of the Mediterranean Universitiy Community (CUM), founded in 1983 and recognized by UNESCO as a autonomous non governmental body, where converge 158 Universities from all over Mediterranean countries.

From the academic year 1999/2000 the decedentralized branch of Foggia became autonomous. After the Polytechnic, inclusive of the Faculty of Engeneering and faculty of Architecture,it is the second Apulian University that came out from the barese Athenaeum. Besides, still starting from the same academic year a degree course in Psychology, focus in Psychology of labour and organizations, has been activated within the Faculty of Education Sciences and Faculty of Political Sciences has been instituted.
